PenFed is hiring a remote Engineer III, IT Applications at one of the following locations: San Antonio, Texas; Dallas, Texas; McLean, Virginia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Jacksonville, Florida, Phoenix, Arizona, or Omaha Nebraska.The primary purpose of this job is to guide other application developers and leads in the creation of large or complex applications that facilitate the achievement of business outcomes by process and technology.

  • Serve as a Technical Lead and provide Subject Matter Expertise for project/task planning, estimation, scheduling, and staffing.
  • Lead and contribute to design discussions and ensure that designs are aligned with the PenFed Secure By Design philosophy, the PenFed architecture, and also the current roadmap.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and Enterprise Architecture to design systems of high complexity.
  • Review system/application designs to ensure the selection of appropriate technologies, the efficient use of resources, and the proper integration of systems and technologies.
  • Assume technical responsibility for all stages of the software development process to ensure compliance with application development standards and achievement of documented requirements.
  • Develop and maintain accurate system/application documentation via the use of flowcharts, diagrams, and other relevant tools.
  • Perform code reviews and/or review pull requests to ensure adherence to established standards and practices.
  • Accountable for providing escalation support to troubleshoot and maintain production systems and to resolve production issues and outages.
  • Maintain the highest levels of system availability.
  • Interact with other engineers and management to identify areas of improvement for operational efficiency.
  • Assign work to technical staff, monitor their performance, and report on their progress.

  • Work closely with technical and non-technical personnel within and across PenFed departments and vendors.
  • Remain current on relevant/new technologies and available vendor packages; evaluate and make recommendations for adoption as appropriate.
  • Provide advice, guidance, and assistance to junior engineers in researching technical problems and designs of varying complexity in order to develop staff capabilities.
  • Review recommendations from junior engineers.  Advocate and/or implement these recommendations, as appropriate.
  • Comply with Incident Management and Change Management procedures and reporting practices.
  • Participate in on-call 24x7 support as needed in the event of system outage or failure.

Qualifications

Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or a related field.
  • Minimum of six (6) years’ experience with Hogan COBOL Application Programming.
  • Minimum of six (6) years’ experience with source management tools.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in Applications Development / Applications Delivery Pipelines.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience with infrastructure designs, implementation, and support.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience with large-scale software implementation (high transaction volume, high-availability concepts).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with any of the following is preferred: DB2, Easytrieve, zLinux, SOAP, XML, Web Services, Micro Services and Celeriti.
  • Distributed platforms knowledge will also be factored:  ASP, SQL Server, Sybase, .Net, Java, JavaScript, Visual Basic, VBScript.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will not directly supervise employees.

 

Licenses and Certifications

There are no additional certifications required.

 

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.

*Most roles require working in an office setting with moderate noise and the ability to lift 25 pounds.*

 

Travel

Ability to travel to various worksites and be on-call is required.
